What is RODI water?
RODI water stands for Reverse Osmosis Deionized water, a purified form of water that has been filtered to remove nearly all dissolved solids, minerals, chemicals, and contaminants. Tap water often contains things like chlorine, heavy metals, nitrates, phosphates, and silicates, which can fuel algae growth and harm sensitive reef animals. An RODI system pushes water through multiple stages of filtration, typically sediment, carbon, reverse osmosis, and deionization resin, to produce ultra-clean water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) of 0. Using RODI water is important for saltwater reef tanks because it provides a clean, stable starting point when mixing saltwater and topping off evaporation, helping prevent unwanted nutrients and giving corals and other marine life the healthiest possible environment.
Where do I get RODI water?
The easiest and most practical option is to purchase RODI water and premixed saltwater from your local aquarium store. Because desktop tanks only require small amounts of water, there’s usually no need to invest in an RODI unit or mix your own saltwater at home. Many local fish stores produce large batches of clean RODI and properly mixed saltwater specifically for hobbyists, making it simple to grab what you need for water changes or top-offs.
