7 Creative Ways to Set Up a 40oz Micro Tank

One of our favorite things about the 40oz Micro Tank is how versatile it can be due to its size. We've seen hobbyists transform these tiny aquariums into everything from macroalgae gardens and mushroom nurseries to freshwater shrimp displays and species-specific coral collections.

Whether you're a beginner looking for something simple or an experienced reefer wanting a unique project, here are some of our favorite ways to set up a 40oz Micro Tank.

1. A Relaxing Macroalgae Garden

If you love the natural look of planted aquariums but want to try saltwater, a macroalgae garden is a fantastic option. Colorful macroalgae such as Dragon's Breath, Codium, and Blue Ochtodes create movement and texture while requiring less intense lighting than many corals. Pair them with tiny inhabitants like bumblebee shrimp, sexy shrimp, or small snails and you'll have a living desktop ecosystem that's constantly changing.

Many freshwater hobbyists find macroalgae tanks to be the perfect introduction to saltwater because they offer a familiar planted-tank aesthetic with the added diversity of marine life.

2. The Zoanthid Showcase

Zoanthids are often called the "collector's coral" because of the incredible variety available. A dedicated zoanthid garden allows you to showcase dozens of colors in a compact footprint. Watching the colonies grow together into a living mosaic is one of the most rewarding experiences in reef keeping. The small size of the tank also makes it much easier to focus on acquiring a few truly special varieties.

3. A Freshwater Shrimp Paradise

The 40oz Micro Reef isn't limited to saltwater. Many hobbyists use it as a freshwater planted aquarium filled with colorful shrimp. Add mosses, miniature plants, driftwood, and stones to create a miniature underwater forest. The small footprint makes it easy to place on a desk, counter, or bookshelf while still providing endless entertainment as shrimp forage and climb all over the rockscape.

4. The Mushroom Nursery

The 40oz Micro Reef makes an excellent dedicated mushroom grow-out system. The controlled environment allows mushrooms to attach securely before being moved into larger displays. Many hobbyists also use these tanks to collect and propagate rare mushroom varieties.

5. The Plug-N-Play Beginner Reef

6. The Flower Anemone Garden

Rock Flower Anemones are available in countless colors and patterns, they create a stunning living carpet across the sand bed. Since they stay relatively compact and don't require the space of larger anemones, they're perfectly suited for small systems. They do best in a more established tank, so plan to wait at least a month or two before adding them in.

7. A Monochromatic Reef

Imagine an aquarium filled entirely with orange or pink corals. By limiting the color palette, every coral works together to create a display that feels intentional and artistic. A micro reef provides an opportunity to do something unique and unexpected.

Dual-Tank Display

Who says you need to stop at one? One of our favorite setups featured two 40oz tanks side-by-side: a freshwater shrimp aquarium on one side and a colorful reef tank on the other. The contrast between freshwater plants and corals creates an eye-catching display that always sparks conversation. Because each tank has such a small footprint, it's easy to fit multiple ecosystems on a desk, shelf, or countertop.

The Best Setup Is the One You'll Enjoy Every Day

The beauty of the 40oz Micro Tank is that there isn't a single "correct" way to build one. Some hobbyists enjoy collecting rare corals. Others prefer shrimp, macroalgae, or species-specific displays. Some even build multiple tanks to explore different aspects of the hobby simultaneously.

The best setup is the one that makes you stop, watch, and smile every time you walk by. Whether you're building your first micro aquarium or your tenth, don't be afraid to think outside the box.
