Clean-Up Crew for Desktop Tanks: Our Recommended Picks

One of the most exciting milestones in a new saltwater aquarium is adding your first clean up crew. These hardworking animals help keep your tank looking its best by consuming algae, leftover food, and detritus before it can become a problem.
Clean up crew members are a staple of every successful saltwater aquarium. Not only do they serve an important purpose, but they are also fun to observe. Hermit crabs, snails, and other scavengers quickly become favorite inhabitants of the tank and are just as much "pets" as your fish, shrimp, or corals.
Before adding any clean up crew, it's important to allow your aquarium to fully cycle. We recommend waiting approximately one month after setup before introducing your first snails or hermit crabs. This gives beneficial bacteria time to establish and ensures there is enough natural algae and biofilm available for your clean up crew to graze on.
Start Small and Build Slowly
One of the most common mistakes with desktop aquariums is adding too many clean up crew members too quickly. While it can be tempting to stock a large crew right away, smaller aquariums simply do not produce enough food to support large populations. Start with a few animals and gradually add more as your aquarium matures. This prevents starvation and helps maintain a balanced ecosystem.
When shopping for clean up crew members, always ask your local fish store for the smallest specimens available. Many stores carry multiple sizes of the same species, and the larger individuals are often better suited for bigger aquariums. For desktop reefs, tiny snails and small hermit crabs are usually the best choice.
Don't Forget the Free Helpers
Micro brittle stars are one of our favorite clean up crew members! These tiny starfish often hitchhike into aquariums on live rock or coral frags and are completely reef safe. They spend their time scavenging leftover food and detritus in hard-to-reach areas and require no special care. If you spot tiny star-shaped arms extending from cracks in your rockwork at night, congratulations, you may already have a growing clean up crew!

It's much easier to add a few more snails or hermit crabs later than it is to support a clean up crew that was stocked too heavily from the start.
