The myth that small tanks are too hard to maintain comes from decades-old experiences, long before today’s filtration technology, smarter workflows, and increased education. Modern equipment and a little consistency means caring for a small tank is easier than ever.
And to make it even simpler, we’ve created a free downloadable Weekly Maintenance Checklist designed specifically for PNW Custom tanks under 5 gallons. This checklist is a great starting point to grow your skills and establish your routine.

Your Weekly Routine: Simple, Fast, Effective
Thanks to the tank’s built-in filtration, thoughtfully designed sump, and evaporation-reducing lids, maintenance is incredibly fast and predictable. Most weeks, you can have everything done in just a few minutes.
Daily (1–2 Minutes)
Check temperature (74-80°)
Top off water if needed (or verify the ATO is functioning)
Make sure your pump is flowing normally
Quick look at your fish, corals, and inverts
Weekly (5–10 Minutes)
Change Filter Pad (Twice weekly)
Feed Benepets (Twice weekly)
Water Change (30-50%)
Monthly (10–15 Minutes)
Clean Drain and Return Tubes
Clean Pump (Every 6-8 weeks)
Optional: Change Carbon (Every 4-6 weeks)
Make Maintenance Even Easier With Helpful Accessories
Our desktop aquariums are already designed for simple upkeep, but you can make your routine even easier with a few smart add-ons.
Master Tool Kit
Our Master Tool Kit gives you precision tweezers, cutters, and scrapers to handle algae, frag placement, and micro-tank adjustments with total control.
Drip Tray
Pair it with our Drip Tray to prevent spills on your desk or countertop while doing water changes or cleaning.
Auto Top Off (ATO)
And if you want the most hands-off experience possible, an Auto Top Off (ATO) keeps your salinity rock-steady by automatically replacing evaporated water. Pair it with our Micro ATO Water Container so that you can easily store water.
Building a Routine
Consistent maintenance is the foundation of every successful reef tank, big or small. Establishing a simple weekly routine not only keeps your water parameters stable, but also helps you build a deeper understanding of your aquarium. While our Weekly Maintenance Checklist is a great tool to get you started, you likely won’t need it forever. Over time, you’ll learn the rhythms of your tank: how quickly water evaporates, how your corals behave, and when your filtration needs attention. Eventually, maintenance becomes second nature: quick, intuitive, and enjoyable. With the right habits, your desktop aquarium will reward you with long-term stability, vibrant growth, and a thriving slice of the reef right on your desk.
